Goal

In line with its mission, the IET provides annual funding for energy research projects research projects in the energy field to help meet the energy challenges that society will face in the coming decades.

This call for projects invites Polytechnique professors to submit research proposals on an energy-related theme.

In addition to developing new scientific and technological knowledge knowledge in the field of energy, the program has a number of objectives in line with the IET's mission:

  • Support the development of sustainable solutions;
  • Contribute to securing the planet's energy future;
  • Promote systemic understanding of energy issues.

As the complexity of energy issues requires solutions that go beyond engineering, one of the objectives of this program is also to encourage inter- and trans-disciplinary initiatives.

Last but not least, this program also aims to provide access, through research, to a wide range of energy solutions. training to as many students as possible.

Competition

Project funding

  1. Annual funding of up to $60,000.
  2. The duration of funding is a maximum of 3 years.
  3. Eligible expenses are :
    • Salaries of personnel needed to carry out the project (students, postdoctoral fellows technical or professional assistance).
    • Materials required to carry out the project.
    • Publication costs.
    • Participation in conferences
      .
  4. Ineligible expenses are :
    • Principal investigator's salary (and that of co-investigators, if any). if applicable).
    • Entertainment expenses
  5. A financial contribution from an external partner is permitted; it must be clearly clearly indicated in the budget. An administrative fee of 15% charged by Polytechnique must be taken into account.

Eligibility requirements

  1. The principal investigator must be a professor at Polytechnique Montréal.
  2. A researcher may not be associated with more than one funding application. This condition does not apply to the pre-qualification stage.
  3. The principal investigator must not be the principal investigator on another EIT-funded project.
  4. The project's research area must be energy-related (e.g. conversion, distribution, storage, energy efficiency, etc.).
  5. The participation of co-investigators, as well as inter-institutional collaborations, is permitted.
  6. The IET Academic Director is not eligible for this program.

Evaluation criteria

Proposals will be evaluated primarily according to the following criteria:

  1. Relevance of the project to the EIT's mission; potential for positive socio-economic spin-offs.
  2. Innovative nature of the project and its potential impact on the energy sector.
  3. Scientific and technical quality of the project.
  4. Quality of the research team.
  5. Contribution to the training of highly qualified personnel (HQP).

Annual progress report

At each anniversary date of the project, a report will be required presenting the progress of work and a budget update. For projects lasting more than one (1) year, this report is a prerequisite for funding in years 2 and 3.

Intellectual property

Intellectual property arising from research funded under this program will be governed by the rules and practices in effect at Polytechnique Montréal.

For a project involving an external partner, it is the responsibility of the principal investigator to work with the CTRB to establish an agreement with the latter, particularly with regard to the technological intellectual property envisaged.

As part of the IET's mission is to contribute to a better understanding of energy issues, all results and conclusions generated by this program must be accessible for dissemination by the IET. Proposers must first ensure that they are in a position to meet this requirement.

Selection process

Pre-qualification

In addition to validating the project's eligibility for the program, pre-qualification will serve to assess the project's relevance to the EIT's mission. At this stage, socio-economic considerations in particular will guide project selection. These considerations revolve around three themes:

  • Supply - developing sustainable energy systems with a low carbon footprint
  • Efficiency - reducing losses in energy systems
  • Demand - reducing the energy intensity of the economy; modulating behavior.

Favored projects will be those with the greatest potential for positive impact in any of these three areas.

At the end of this stage, a maximum of five (5) projects will be selected for submission of the complete project file.

The committee responsible for this task will be made up of members of the EIT management committee, excluding those who have submitted a project.

Submission of project file

Researchers whose project has been pre-qualified will be invited to complete their project file. At this stage of the process, projects will be assessed on all the evaluation criteria presented above.

A positive evaluation by the committee will lead to full funding of one (1) project, within the parameters presented (i.e. a maximum of $180,000 over a 3-year period) and subject to compliance with program requirements - notably the production of an annual progress report and budget update.

The IET is not committed to maintaining an annual funding minimum. Only the quality of proposals submitted and the progress of work (for projects already funded) will determine the annual amounts awarded.
