The IET in brief

An influential academic institute on energy issues at the Canadian level, the IET is a Quebec-based scientific think tank and strategic support organization dedicated to accelerating energy transformations in Canada. Its actions are aimed at neutralizing greenhouse gas emissions to ensure a sustainable future. Its independence gives it the neutrality essential to the collaborative approach it advocates, facilitating work with the players most likely to advance the energy transition, while allowing it to be freely critical where relevant.

Vision

As a generator of essential energy knowledge, the IET develops skills, mobilizes knowledge, analyzes data data, recommends trajectories, popularizes the issues and and supports transition players in their efforts to achieve climate objectives. From an interdisciplinary interdisciplinary perspective, the EIT contributes to the co-construction of a sustainable society, balancing economic, social and environmental costs.

Mission

Mobilising science and governance to help catalyse the transition towards low-carbon Canadian energy systems in a way that supports support the achievement of carbon neutrality by our society, within a climate emergency.

Fundamental values

Promoting the common good - Acting effectively to implement an energy transition in the best public interest and without bias towards particular energy sectors.

Scientific rigor - Rely on objective, broad-based evidence and analysis to deliver recommendations with intellectual honesty.

Disinterested openness - To collaborate independently with the players most capable of advancing the energy transition, and to be freely critical where relevant.

The creation of the Trottier Energy Institute was made possible by an exceptional donation from the Trottier Family Foundation to Polytechnique Montréal. As the initial ten-year mandate came to an end, the Trottier Family Foundation chose to renew the IET's mandate with a new $8.7 million donation. The team will thus be able to continue offering science-based advice and enriching public dialogue, in order to advance the way we produce, convert, distribute and use energy.

Key lines of action

Education and research - Mobilize expertise, share knowledge and develop know-how.

Analysis and guidance - Help design solutions to energy challenges, guide public policy and support key players in implementing solutions.

Communication - To explain the issues at stake, make people understand the urgent need for action and highlight solutions.
